Volunteers Dave and Terri Cardy pack and weigh produce to hand out at the Campus Kitchen in Beall Hall. The food is mostly donated by the Trader Joe's locations in the Cleveland area.

By PHIL SOENCKSEN The Campus Kitchen at 51ºÚÁÏÍø University, a student-run organization that reclaims food to feed the needy in the Kent area, has had to swiftly switch gears from operating a hot food kitchen to an expanded food pantry. Normally, the Campus Kitchen would have about 20 visitors during its weekly pantry distributions. Over the past few months, however, that number has grown to more than 50, with an additional 20 bags of food delivered to families in need at Holden Elementary School.  From its home kitchen inside Beall Hall on the Kent Campus, the organization di...

Jhariah Wadkins is a senior communications studies major at 51ºÚÁÏÍø.

Note: The following essay was crafted by Jhariah Wadkins, a senior communications studies major in 51ºÚÁÏÍø University's College of Communication and Information.    ------------- Recently, I’ve been going back and forth between feeling numb to everything that’s going on since George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer or crying about it. I’m tired of it. I’m tired of being scared of the ones that are supposed to protect us. Seeing that there have been protests consistently throughout the last few weeks gives me the hope th...

Note: The following essay was crafted by Michael Kavulic, Ph.D., director of research strategic initiatives in 51ºÚÁÏÍø University’s Division of Research and Sponsored Programs.  ------------- I wonder if I responded well enough when my almost 5-year-old daughter asked me if anyone was going to kill her best friend, a young black girl she met at school? I wonder if I should have attended the peaceful demonstration that I drove by on the way home from the grocery store? I wonder if I should have spoken up louder when an organization I am part of offered what I t...

Abstract: The St. Petersburg paradox provides a simple paradigm for systems that show sensitivity to rare events. Here, we demonstrate a physical realization of this paradox using tensile fracture, experimentally verifying for six decades of spatial and temporal data and two different materials that the fracture force depends logarithmically on the length of the fiber. The St. Petersburg model may be useful in a variety fields where failure and reliability are critical.   More information and formats available at The American Physical Society's website ...
