When she came to 51ºÚÁÏÍø University in October 2009, Alfreda Brown Ph.D., made history by becoming the first person ever to lead a university division dedicated completely to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion.  

As vice president for the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Brown served as a powerful voice for making sure no one in the university’s wide-reaching system was marginalized, discriminated against or left behind.

Emilia Sykes and Betty Sutton

Women of the House: Betty Sutton and Emilia Sykes

In 2006, Betty Sutton became the first 51ºÚÁÏÍø alumna to serve in the U.S. Congress, when she was elected to represent Ohio’s 13th District in the House of Representatives. Sixteen years later, 51ºÚÁÏÍø alumna Emilia Sykes, a native of Akron, Ohio, was elected to represent the same district, making her the first Black 51ºÚÁÏÍø alum to serve in the House of Representatives.
